Daycare Photography: A Parent's Guide to Getting the Best Photos

Photo Day Is Coming — Here's How to Make It Magical ✨

There's something truly special about capturing your child during their early years at daycare or preschool. Those cheeky grins, the shy smiles, the pure joy — these are the moments you'll treasure forever. At Tiny Treehouse Studio, we photograph children across Newcastle, Port Stephens, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter Valley, and we've learned a thing or two about making photo day a wonderful experience for everyone.

Here's your complete guide to getting the most out of daycare photo day.

1. How to Prepare Your Child for Photo Day

A little preparation goes a long way in helping your child feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

  • Talk it up! In the days leading up to photo day, mention it casually and positively. "Your photographer is coming to take some special pictures of you at daycare — how fun!"
  • Keep the morning calm. A relaxed start to the day means a happier, more settled child when it's their turn in front of the lens.
  • Avoid big changes. Photo day isn't the best time for a new haircut or a brand-new outfit they haven't worn before — stick with what feels familiar and comfortable.
  • Let them know it's okay to be themselves. We love genuine expressions — giggles, serious faces, and everything in between. There's no wrong way to smile!

2. What to Wear on Photo Day

Clothing choices can make a big difference in how photos turn out. Here are a few tips:

  • Solid colours and simple patterns tend to photograph beautifully. Avoid very busy prints or large logos that can distract from your child's face.
  • Dress for comfort. If your child is uncomfortable, it will show! Choose something they love wearing.
  • Layers work well — a cardigan or jacket can be removed if needed. If a child is wearing a jumper and it gets dirty before their photo session, the jumper can be removed. Ta Da! A clean shirt underneath. This makes it easier on the educational staff as well.
  • Avoid white or very pale colours if possible, as they can wash out in photos.
  • Hair and accessories: Keep it simple. A favourite hair clip or bow is lovely; just make sure hair is out of their eyes so we can see that beautiful face!
  • Dresses and skirts - for children wearing dresses and skirts, always pop a pair of shorts underneath. Bike shorts work well.

3. What to Expect on the Day

We know that handing your child over for photos can feel a little nerve-wracking — especially for the little ones who are shy or going through a clingy phase. Here's what typically happens:

  • We work closely with your daycare or preschool educators, who know your child best. They'll help settle any nerves and make the experience feel safe and fun.
  • Sessions are kept short and sweet — we work at your child's pace, never rushing or forcing a smile.
  • We use gentle prompts, silly sounds, and lots of patience to bring out natural expressions.
  • If your child is having a tough day, that's okay! We do our very best with every child, and sometimes the most authentic photos come from the most unexpected moments.

4. Choosing the Right Package

Once photos are ready, you'll have the opportunity to choose a package that suits your family. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Think about how you'll use the photos. Do you love having prints on the wall, or do you prefer digital files to share with family? Our packages are designed to suit different needs.
  • Consider gifting. Grandparents, aunties, and uncles often love a print or card — a package with extras can be great value if you're sharing the love.
  • Don't overthink it! Every package includes beautiful images. Trust your gut when you see your child's photos — you'll know which ones you can't live without.

5. Tips for Getting the Best Photos

A few final tips from us to you:

  • Make sure your child has had a good sleep the night before — tired toddlers and cameras don't always mix!
  • Feed them well beforehand. A hungry child is a grumpy child.
  • Let the educators know if your child has any specific fears, sensitivities, or things that make them laugh — we love this kind of intel!
  • Trust the process. We've photographed hundreds of little ones across the Hunter region, and we genuinely love what we do. Your child is in good hands.
